Highlights of our Three Day Celebration.
Friday, July 29:
1:00-7:00 We are open!
Our photo exhibit was so popular! Thanks to everyone who donated photos from their private collections. The art exhibit opened as well, with drawings, ceramics, paintings and fabric art.
3:00 pm Architectural Walk and Talk
Alan Hess led the first of three "Architectural Walk and Talk" tours. These were so popular, that by Sunday, Alan was promising to follow up with additional tours during the fall.
7:00-9:00 The historical highlight of our event!
More than 80 people attended the Welcome Reception, viewed the display of historical articles and photos, as well as exhibits from the Irvine Historical Society and the UCI Library's collection. The panel of Irvine Company architects and planners, moderated by Alan Hess, got rave reviews. We were all fascinated with the account of Albert Trevino, the "Father of University Park." We were honored that Bill Woollett, our very first City Manager attended, along with other current city officials. The Mayor presented a plaque, thanking the community for planning and
Thank you to the Irvine Company for making this possible!
Saturday, July 30:
9:00-10:00 am Doggie Parade
What fun! This was one of the most fun events of the weekend.
All Day: Our videographer took photos and interviewed residents. We'll see the results at our After Party on September 23.
11:00 am-3:00 pm Family Picnic - Fun, bingo, food, activities for all ages!
Thrifty's 10 cents a scoop ice cream was a big hit plus Sno-cones, cotton candy, kettle corn, and rootbeer for sixties prices.
Mike and Marshall of Marshall London, with their acoustic guitars were our MCs. Hannah Dunning, opened our celebration with "American the Beautiful" and led everyone in singing "This Land is Your Land."
2:30 pm Irvine Pioneer Parade. Drawings for our most fabulous prizes!
The parade was a great success, with the biggest crowd from 1966. Afterwards, we drew tickets for the Early Bird cash prize and the wonderful barbecue donated by Home Depot.
4:00-6:30 pm Ice Cream Social and Dance
Ice cream, root beer and toppings, plus cookies kept everyone fueled, and the music of the "Too Much Fun" was truly "too much fun." It was the Beach Boys, the Beatles -- all the fun tunes of the fifties and sixties with our great "oldies" band.
Sunday, July 31:
9:00-11:00 am Kiwanis "All You Can Eat" Pancake Breakfast.
The Pancake breakfast was "standing room only" as all the tables were filled with happy pancake eaters. The Kiwanis got a donation of $300 for their youth programs! Starbucks provided coffee, there was fruit and orange juice and sausage, and the photo exhibit and art exhibit got their last visitors. That afternoon, Alan Hess guided his largest crowd through our village. We cleaned up, took down our signs and banners, and our committee felt very happy about this successful weekend!
